Coos Art Museum's 13th annual Maritime Art Exhibit opens July 21 and runs through September 23, 2006. A juried exhibit of 72 paintings and 11 sculptures by 63 artists from around the country are on display in the Maggie Karl Gallery. A solo exhibit by featured Artist Sylvia Waters, of Big Bear, CA, accompanies the exhibition. Waters is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the International Society of Maritime Painters. At the Opening Night Reception, 5 - 7pm on Friday, July 21, Waters will present the award for 'Best of Show'. Coos Art Museum will also present their 'Directors' Award; the International Port of Coos Bay will present their 'Commissioners' Award, while patrons and exhibition visitors will vote for the 'People's Choice' award.

On display in the Uno E. Richter Atrium Gallery is 'Sea Curtains', an undersea garden experience by Rogue Valley installation artist, Audrey Sochor. An octogenarian who continues to create installation pieces, Sochor's works have hung at aquariums and art centers located on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
On display in the Mabel Hansen Gallery, 'A Curator's View of Oregon's Maritime History' - excerpts from Coos Art Museum's Victor West Collection of historical photographs. Curated by Ciara Van Velsor, this exhibit gives the museum visitor a glimpse of the over 30,000 piece collection. Van Velsor's has been working on a year-long project to conserve the Collection by digitalizing and cataloging the negatives, images, drawings, maps, charts and personal letters of Victor West. Supported in part by a grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust, the Oregon Heritage Commission and Trust Management Services, the Victor West Collection conservation project is helping to preserve an Oregon treasure for future generations.
Founded by The Coos Artists League in 1950, Coos Art Museum is the 3rd oldest art museum in Oregon. Coos Art Museum is housed in Coos Bay's historic circa 1936 Post Office building. With 5 galleries, Coos Art Museum mounts 30 exhibitions annually. Coos Art Museum's 525 piece Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century American art rotates on display - but can also be viewed online at CAM's website. Coos Art Museum is located at 235 Anderson Ave in downtown Coos Bay or online at www.coosart.org. Open Tues - Fri, 10am - 4pm, Sat. 1pm - 4pm. Closed Sunday, Monday and holidays.
